first imp;ressions

it's really queer
when i first saw this word, 'lugubrious'
i thought it would mean something along the lines of 'bright', 'glowing' or 'incandescent'
but when i finally found time to look it up in webster's
it actually means 'mournful', 'dark', 'dismal'
gosh, it;s the exact opposite of what i imagined it to be

etymology is really interesting, especially chinese etymology
why don't they have etymology as a course in NUS?
i mean, even aussie unis have courses like asian studies, zoology, nutrition etcetc..
they don't even have forensic science;
if only they had courses like criminology, astronomy, archaeology, sports science, genealogy..
but i guess they never will, cos NUS is so... NUS.
